Notes from DVD on NZ Ministry Phonics Program
Training dvd shows NZ teachers of 5-7 year olds delivering explicit phonics lessons with emphasis on transfer to reading and writing.

Stage 2
Hearing and Reading
--initial sounds
1. ch. look at picture card and say first sound
2. T. says word and asks for 1st sound. Ch. respond.
3. T. tells story for sound (scripted) and ch. repeat. Letter is drawn on w. board as story is told.
Stage 2
Revision (seems to have different meaning in NZ ed. speak)
card work
- picture cards in quick succession. Ch. respond with first sound
- letter cards in quick succession. Ch. respond with sound not letter name
white boards
- T. says “First sound in insect. Ch. write the letter on w. board. T. holds up correct letter card. Says “Give yourself a tick, if yours looks like mine.”
Stage 3
Writing
last phoneme in word
- T. says word/shows card. Ch. write letter on w. board. Show T.
- T. shows picture. Says name. Then asks for first or last phoneme.
Stage 4
Hearing
Teacher says string of 3 rhyming words. Ch. clap each word back.
ex.)
T: Ben men ten
ch: Ben men ten

T. “Hen. What is the middle sound for hen?”
(Uses motion for middle: points to top of head with both hands)
Robbie Robot motions:
(Motions are used as the word is slowly said.)
Beg. sound = right robot arm bent up at elbow
2nd sound = left robot arm bent up at elbow
3rd sound = right robot arm bent up at elbow
blending word = right robot arm swings across body to the left
Stage 5
Reading
T. says long string of words ending with ck
T: What phoneme do you hear at the end?
If you hear ck, this is how you write it. (Writes ck on w. board.)

Ch. 2 letters making one sound
T. What do we call it?
Ch. diagraph
Ch. repeat words in chunks using robot motion
l-o-ck, c-l-o-ck, etc.
Step 6
Writing

Changing feed to seed
Ch. change needed letters on their w. board
change seed to see
continue through several changes
Silly Sentence
- T. reads sentence.
- Ch. write it on white boards.
- T. picks one board to hold up so ch. can check their work.
T: Can you change the sentence to a question.
